Bicycle Thievery

Something really bananas, yet completely amazing happened yesterday! A few weeks ago I was browsing craigslist for vintage bicycles, comparing the sales competition since I was selling one myself and came across this heartbreaking ad.

Such a beautiful and unique bike was stolen from Becky, and my heart went out to her since I love my own bike dearly. I shared this story with my boyfriend Charlie, because I couldn't keep the sorrow to myself.

WELL telling him paid off, because yesterday as I waited in the car while Charlie made a quick purchase from Walgreens he spotted the stolen bicycle! He rushed me out of the car to confirm what he suspected to be stolen goods, and there is was, a magenta colored Schwinn Collegiate bike, with original two toned seat.

During this bout of admiration and inspection an older woman approached us and immediately asked if it was a stolen bike. She explained that her upstairs neighbor brought it home a few weeks ago, and has had it laying outside of the house since. Being that she didn't know where he got it from and it wasn't being used she seized the opportunity to borrow it occasionally to run errands. SHE EVEN GAVE US THE ADDRESS OF HER HOUSE, and offered to let us follow her so it could be returned to the rightful owner, as she had no interest in riding stolen goods.

We called Becky who shrieked with joy upon hearing the news, who then called the police to follow up the report she had filed. We met Becky at the site of the bike and waited with her while the police came. With her was her adorable, albeit hungry baby son. Nursing child in tote, she explained that although she is usually not one to be attached to material possessions, this bike was a garage sale fixer-upper find, that she's been pedaling upon for ten years.

Phone numbers exchanged and police information taken care of Charlie and I headed home. Naturally in this situation I came unprepared without camera, but I plan to contact Becky soon to see if a brief photo-shoot could be arranged for me to get some pictures of her with her beauty of a bicycle. Expect to see those here soon.

I am sooooo happy she got her bicycle back, I would be devastated if anyone took mine. Sometimes craigslist is not creepy and can help get peoples bicycles back to them.

What a nice story! How refreshing to read that craigslist can be used for more than awkward hookups. Definitely looking forward to those pictures of Becks and her bike.
